2010 National Stationery Show {During the Show}

With part 2 of our 3 part National Stationery Show series we’re going to discuss today how some of the designers felt the show went and how they changed their game plan each day. You might be asking yourself, change your game plan? Yes, it’s vital to be flexible during a trade or craft show, especially if you are exhibiting for more than one day. It’s also beneficial because you can take note of what didn’t work well the first day and turn the end of the show a major success. This is what Nancy of Hazel and Violet did during her stint at the show. Let’s hear what she had to say:

“From a sales standpoint we were also pleased. Things went very slowly at first and we were a little disappointed – but after the first day we saw an improvement. We made several changes midstream – we changed our display as we noticed more interest in different cards and we changed up the ‘patter’ somewhat as time went on. I feel that because of all the time we spent researching, the collective wisdom of our group and some advice from veterans – that we were pretty well prepared. No big surprises.”

As a rookie to the trade show scene, they obviously know their stuff and were wise enough to recognize what was working and make that the forefront of their sales pitch.

Katie, from Kelp Designs, came in with a different angle than Nancy and her team. This was Katie’s second year exhibiting at the show and after some learning curves she finally nailed down what was working and had her goals set to highlight them.

“The show went really well for us this year. We had significantly more orders than last year, had consistent traffic in the booth, lots of people stopping by because they received our pre-show postcards, and of course, met lots of twitter friends.

I felt a lot more confident going into this year’s show. I had a better sense of my product, my wholesale pricing and my overall goals for the show. And, it seemed that there were more people walking the show this year, which was reassuring. My goal each day was to talk to as many people as possible and use our time at the show to network with retailers, other designers and vendors on the supply side. Its rare to get so many talented, collaborative people together under one roof! I didn’t get around to visit with other designers as much as I would have liked, but I was fortunate to meet a lot of folks that came by for Twitter pins. Next year I will definitely make more time to walk the show and see the other booths.

We received a very strong response to our new line of accessories (bookplates, luggage tags, and magnets). It was exciting and overwhelming. People really liked that the accessories corresponded with the flat and folded cards and could be paired as gift sets.”

I think it’s extremely important to know your product well in order to make any show a success. And Katie is a fine example of this.

Stay tuned for part 3: After The Show.

She got a bike!

Yesterday was the first time in a really long time I did not turn the computer on and truly took a day off. I’m not going to lie and say it was effortless but it did feel so good spending quality time with my two loves.

In the morning we all went to Starbucks for tea, coffee, and lemonade then headed to the store to get Kendall a bike. Ever since she turned 2 I always wanted her to have a bike. She rides them at school and from what I hear loves it. So this weekend we set out to get her a tricycle. I went with every intention of getting her an old school radio flyer but Wayne wanted to get her a bike with training wheels. I thought she would a) be too tall for a regular bike and b) wouldn’t grasp the concept that pedaling backwards makes you stop and then would have to re-assure her that the bike is not an evil contraption. However, to my surprise she was too tall for the radio flyer and could consistently pedal before we left the store. She is one smart cookie!tricycletricycletricycletricycle
And she’s off!tricycletricycletricycletricycle
Look at how happy she is. I love this girl!tricycle

What did you do this weekend?

National Stationery Show

Cyn and I drove down to New York early on a gorgeous Sunday morning to walk the National Stationery Show. This year it didn’t take all day as we had prepared ahead of time – a game plan so to speak. We met some old friends and made new ones. Here are some of my favorites from the show. Who were yours?

Calendar Project
Calendar ProjectBy far the neatest idea was the calendar project. This was a collaboration between 12 designers who each designed and printed 1 month as part of an entire calendar set. The goal was for you to visit each booth and complete your set. What a fun idea!

{PD Customer} 1st Birthday

I was beyond thrilled when Colleen emailed me letting me know she blogged about her daughter’s first birthday party which included our giraffe favor tags. She definitely has an eye for party throwing, with 5 kids you get A LOT of practice. Here is an interview with Colleen about her giraffe birthday party for her darling daughter, Cait.

PD CustomerHi Colleen! Tell us about yourself.
My name is Colleen Banman and I have a wonderful husband and 5 awesome kids; 4 girls and one boy ranging in age from 10 to 1. I have been crafting as long as I can remember. My own Mom and I took weekly trips to Michaels when I was a kid. Around high school I started focusing on parties, I loved choosing a theme and going crazy with it. This passion exploded when I started throwing my own kids’ birthday parties. I love celebrating people, I love making them feel special and I love looking after every detail! I am a bit of a dabbler though, parties is not my only vice. I make hair bows and cakes as well. Why not? There are only so many hours in the day, I like to keep them full and busy and productive!

What were your ideas for the party: themes, colors, etc.?
Originally, I was planning to do Cait’s party with a “pink and brown giraffe” theme. This theme idea began while I was still pregnant. I had just found out I was having a girl and I was sewing her a blanket with pink and brown satin giraffe print. I planned the party with this theme all the way up until two weeks before the party! At this point, a bolt of fabric stopped me dead in my tracks, made me walk backwards down the isle, and drop my jaw. It was THAT fabulous and it completely suited Cait’s personality. The fabric had pink and brown along with lime green and orange and hot pink and turquoise in it so I quickly added those colors in the way of lanterns and fabrics and ribbons. When I am planning a party I focus first on a theme, then I plan out how I am going to decorate. I usually have two focus points: one at the food table and one “backdrop” for photos when the cake is being served. I go to town with fabric for table cloths, lanterns, and favors. I also love to have an amazing cake. When planning a first birthday (my personal favorite!) I make sure baby has a unique party hat, a cute outfit, and a smash cake. I also like to make a wall (or two) of photos!

Giraffe Birthday PartyGiraffe Birthday PartyWhat did you like about Perideau Designs’ products?
I love the simple yet charming designs. The giraffe design caught my eye because I was planning a giraffe party but every one of Perideau’s designs is original and clean and fresh. I have my eye on a few of the fabulous wall hangings!

Giraffe Birthday PartyGiraffe Birthday PartyAny more party planning in the future?
With 5 children, the planning never stops! As my children get older, they direct the theme a bit. I am not satisfied with just buying Hannah Montana party ware, I work with them until I feel inspired and excited with the “vision” and then we run with it. If it’s a pink and lime green zebra party, the whole family talks zebra party until the party happens and then whoever is next in line for a birthday says “can we talk about MY party now Mom? Pleeeease?” I love that this is something that I can do to celebrate each little person in my life in a big way!

Stop and smell the roses

Today as I sat in a company meeting at my 9-5, the speaker showcased all that we had in store to accomplish, looking as far ahead as next year. As I sat there and contemplated the accomplishments we’ve made and those we hope to make, I couldn’t help but stop to think about how our society is constantly looking ahead. We’re always trying to be the next big “thing”. We need to be 2 steps ahead of our competition and stay abreast of trends and fads. All simply to stay afloat.

But what about the popular saying, “Stop and smell the roses”? Where does that come into play when we’re constantly looking days, weeks, and months ahead?

As a business owner I’m always looking what the next holiday will be. For example, on Mother’s Day, and I know some might shake their head at this, but I was photographing new designs that will be debuting soon for Father’s Day. Another example that hits the nail on the head is the 2010 Paper Source holiday catalog that arrived in our mailbox today – - in May.

Hey, I get it. Wholesalers need to be way ahead of the game especially when a big show, like the National Stationery Show, is fast approaching. It’s a necessity. It keeps businesses growing.

But as a business owner AND a human being, I’m vowing to always “Stop and smell the roses” My dear friend Emily commented on one of my posts where I reflected on how much my daughter has grown:

“It’s great that you take the time to stop and smell the roses, B — people need to do this more than they usually do, I think.”

So I ask, do you stop to smell the roses? Do you relish in the moment?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

2010 National Stationery Show {Before the show cont.}

national stationery showOnly 3 more days before the National Stationery Show begins and I’d like to end the pre-show talk with interviews from both sides of the spectrum. First up we have a seasoned veteran sharing their tips and experiences from the 14 years of exhibiting. And then we have the pleasure of reading about the roller coaster of emotions from a rookie.

First up is the Inviting Company based out of North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Tell us about yourself and your business?
Inviting Company has always been known as an invitation and stationery company, but recently we have expanded our business to include paper tableware and a wide variety of gift products.

What have you been doing to prepare for the show? Did you do anything different than the years past?
We are continuing to diversify our product line to bring customers what they have been asking for – which is more fantastic stationery products from Inviting Company, but also expansion into gift products.

Any tips for new exhibitors?
Every contact or lead is like gold – treat them that way!

And we round up our pre-show interviews with a rookie exhibitor, Nancy and Beverly, from Hazel and Violet.
Tell us about yourself and your business?
We are a small letterpress company in Arizona – At this time it is the two of us. We have been friend for 25 years and have always shared a love of paper and typography. We do custom invitations, personalize social stationery and greeting cards.

What made you take the plunge to move into wholesale?
We really liked the idea of making greeting cards. We have so many ideas we wanted to express and it seemed the best way to make the kind of cards we wanted. We have partnered with a fabulous designer who really ‘gets it’ and knows exactly what we want. It will be interesting to see if this avenue works for us.

What have you been doing to prepare for the show?
So much work! We thought the hard part would be the printing – We were wrong – it’s the press releases, the catalog, the press kit, the marketing! show specials, packaging…on and on. We think we are finally together though.

Thank you ladies for sharing your preparations. Check back in the next few weeks with my experience walking the National Stationery Show and finally an After the Show wrap up.
