Yesterday I had the pleasure of hearing Adam Richman, from Man v. Food, speak about his show, life, and why he does what he does. Besides being an absolute riot, Adam mentioned something yesterday that struck a cord with me about independently owned businesses. Him and his crew purposefully set out to find the most unique restaurants around the country to do food eating challenges specifically for their story. Yes they must have outstanding and unique food but it’s about the story and the people behind the business that make their restaurant stand out.
That is so true with the indie community.
For the longest time, I was a Coach fanatic. I had the purses, wallets, and yes, even the diaper bag. But when I found Moop, I was hooked! Not only do they handmake terrific bags but I know the person behind the brand. Wendy is sweet, sincere, and most important human. When’s the last time you sent an email to the owner of Target and received one back that wasn’t automated? My answer would be never. But it’s shop owners like Wendy and myself that make the indie community so well worth supporting because each product has a story.
I try to not only make great stationery that fulfills a need but try to bring my story out as well. One of my best sellers, the personalized weekly dinner menu was created out of a need I had with planning dinners. It was organized, stylish, and functional and I thought if I loved it, maybe others would to. And that’s how it begins…with a story.
My most recent design, the bubble gum party packs, were inspired by my daughter. Her favorite pair of pajamas are those that have bubble gum machines all over it. I thought, if she loved them, they would then make for a great invitation design!

So next time you make a purchase, think about who the voice is behind this product.
