Our conversation

Today’s conversation went a little like this:
KB: What are you eating mom?
Me: Ice cream
KB: I can’t have any?
Me: No, sorry honey…
KB: It will make me sick?
Me: Yes sweetheart.

It’s really starting to get to me now that Kendall is realizing that she cannot eat certain foods. She’s really great not asking for our food, if we’re eating something different. But now that she’s making the connection and verbalizing it, my heart is breaking knowing she may go through life never knowing what ice cream tastes like or what real macaroni and cheese is.

She’s happy as a clam eating her brownies or drinking an Artic Rush from DQ because we spoil her in the food department as there are so many other things, we take for granted, that she cannot have. And I’ve found great resources such as The Food Allergy Mama’s Baking Book and a great gluten-free blog: Cook Allergy Free which make dinner time so much easier. However it’s still difficult to pick up something quick to eat when you don’t feel like cooking or when traveling.

But I continue to hope and pray her allergies subside sooner rather than later. In the meantime though, I continue to pray she keeps the strength, love, and spirit she possesses. She really is one special girl.

Sneak Peek

Sneak PeekVacation has left me with a burst of creativity and I’m riding the train for as long as I can. You never know when and where inspiration may strike so when it does, you must grab hold tight.

Right now I’m working on my 2010 holiday line including our very first calendar, several custom orders such as the bowling party pack and the cutest cupcake invitations. I’m also designing the second edition of some of our notepads. This time I’m looking to create a cohesive collection. I’m loving how they are coming out so I thought I’d share some of my favorites with you.

It’s a bowling party

Bowling PartyI love when customers come back for subsequent birthdays or different events. This one is no exception. The mom sent me a sweetest email saying she’s having a birthday party for her girls and wanted a party pack, but needed some guidance on color choices. I threw out the idea of working together on a custom design and she was game! So we created this cute retro bowling theme party pack in poppy and teal. I’m loving the color combo!

If you have a party coming up and stuck on color combinations or what to do for invitations, just send me a note and let’s work together!

Boston

bostonBostonBostonbostonWe rounded out our staycation but taking a trip to Boston, Massachusetts to see the aquarium. To be honest, I wasn’t that impressed. After an hour or so we saw everything we wanted to and decided to walk around Faneuil Hall which worked out great!

It was such a nice day to eat outside at Ned Devine’s, do a little shopping, and ride the carousel. Despite the pictures, Kendall loved the carousel, so much that she kicked and screamed when it was over. So we purchased another ticket and away we went again. Luckily in this case, third time wasn’t a charm.

Our staycation was perfect but I’m a little anxious to get back into our regular routine.

Retro Apron

apronapronAfter pouring over Sew, Mama, Sew! blog a few weeks ago I stumbled upon Leila & Ben. A website that provides sewing and crochet patterns for modern children. I was immediately drawn to the retro apron with the sleek patterns she used and how somewhat easy the pattern appeared. So I instantly purchased it and here it is! You can’t see the many mistakes or my pin-poked fingers, but I’m sure when Kendall wakes up from her nap she won’t notice them at all.

I already have my eye on another item I want to tackle. What about you? What have you made lately?

New! Personalized Muslin Bags

Muslin BagA couple of weeks ago I posted my prototype of an idea of personalizing muslin bags. Well the response was overwhelming and the uses suggested were so helpful! So I moved forward and after many prototypes, tweaks, tests later, they are now available!

Purchase them in a set and use them as party favors.
Muslin BagPurchase them individually to hold little items around the house such as sewing supplies or buttons.
Muslin BagMuslin BagOr personalize them with a name. Great for holding small toys for kids while traveling.

Bronx Zoo

Bronx ZooBronx ZooBronx ZooBronx ZooBronx ZooBronx ZooYesterday we spent with day with our friends at the Bronx Zoo. I was stressed driving down as a severe thunderstorm hit. I didn’t want to turn around after already driving for an hour but didn’t want to get there and have to walk in the rain. Luckily, just as we arrived the clouds departed and we enjoyed a hot, hazy, and humid day at the zoo. Kendall had so much fun looking at the animals, especially the elephants and giraffes. A terrific start of our stay-cation.

I mentioned awhile back that we were going to go back to Martha’s Vineyard but after getting word that Wayne would be going to South Africa for 6 weeks working at the World Cup, we decided to stay home and take day trips. I’m sure the last thing he would want to do is stay in another hotel and eat out every day. Works out perfectly because we are in the midst of potty training and whoever coined the phrase “It happens overnight” isn’t joking. We’ve been trying for months but one day she decided to go to the potty and we’ve been in full blown training ever since.

Although I’m on vacation from my 9-5, I’m still working sporadically on Perideau Designs. The breaks are nice because I can take the time to start thinking about my 2010 holiday line which is set to debut this October and finalize the details on the muslin bags. You guys gave great feedback and after tweaks here and there I think they are ready to go. Sign up for my newsletter to be the first to hear about the new products being released.

Tomorrow we’re off to the Boston Aquarium! See more pictures of our stay-cation in my flickr album.

Sweet Candy

Candied FabricsI received the sweetest email today from Candy, owner and designer of Candied Fabrics. She entered my blog scavenger hunt a couple of months back and won a set of personalized stationery for herself and a modern initial print. She had the print personalized for her friend’s adorable daughter, Maren. I must say Candy has a good eye because the pink looks fabulous against the green walls.

I’m also visiting her blog today. Hop on over to learn a little bit about me.

Thanks for sharing Candy!

Free Printable :: My Blog Topics

My Blog TopicsA blog is more than an online journal, especially if you’re a shop owner or a professional blogger. It’s a way to be more personable, interact with your customers, and be an extension of you. So you need to maximize it to it’s fullest potential and get readers to follow.

My free printable: “My Blog Topics“, will accomplish this through helping you organize your thoughts and maximize SEO, Search Engine Optimization. In this simple + stylish layout you can plan up to 3 blog posts at a time with space to jot down your notes, ensure you maximize SEO, and keep track of where you promoted your post(s). File each page in a binder so you have a reference for future posts or to expand on a topic.

Tara Gentile, the guru of SEO, has so graciously offered to expand on how to make the most of each posts while using “My Blog Topics” pre-writing organizer. First let’s define SEO also known as Search Engine Optimization. Tara defines it as:

“…the art (and sometimes science) of helping people find your website in search engines. Good SEO involves several pieces of programming code that are most often taken care of for you. Great SEO involves a website that is clearly written, engaging to viewers, and solicits action from readers in the form of social sharing and incoming links from websites.”

Post Title
The words you select for the post title should grab a potential reader’s attention. You want to have the headline that stands out in a sea of headlines in a neglected feed reader. Your post title should also include a keyword or phrase about what your post is about.

Keywords
Imagine that you were looking for your latest blog post on a search engine. What words would you type into the search box? Choosing 1-3 keywords or phrases to focus on for a post keeps your writing centered and helps it get seen in search engines – it’s a win-win situation.

Inspiration
Choosing other articles to link to in your post isn’t sabotage, it’s smart writing. Linking out to other sites helps a search engine understand what your post is about. It’s also a service to readers who may want to delve more deeply into your subject matter. Finally, providing outside links gives your post more authority and will keep your writing on track.

Internal Links
Linking to your own posts inside of new posts is also a great strategy. New readers can see more of your blog. Older readers can go back to posts they might have missed. Either way, when a reader spends more time on your site looking at more pages, you are much more likely to convert them to regular readers – or customers. And did I mention that internal links are great for search engine optimization too?

Call to Action
When you write a post, you need to have in mind what action you would like readers to take when they are finished. A lot of times, it will be to comment on the post. Other times, you might want to ask a reader to share the post with their network. Still other times, you want a reader to act on an idea you have, click through to another site, or duplicate a project you’ve made.

Be sure to tell readers what you want them to do instead of leaving it up to them to figure out!

Follow Up Idea
Turning a single blog post into a short series – or an epic story – is a great way to engage readers. If writing your post inspired new ideas that didn’t quite fit your original purpose, jot them down in this space. When you’re hard up for a post idea, look back through your notes. Don’t forget to link back to the original post when you do!

The Final Word
One of the biggest “mistakes” I see bloggers making is not considering their blog as a whole. They don’t see the bigger picture. They post when they’re inspired, when they have news, when they’ve created a new product. But there isn’t any cohesiveness. There isn’t a sense of anticipation.

To achieve this, make sure you’re asking yourself about the larger questions your blog can answer. And then answer those large questions by posing tiny ones. Those tiny questions are your posts. As the answers to those questions pile up, you can link them together through simple category navigation, pillar content pages, or free resources.

This applies to image-heavy blogs, as well. In fact, it’s one of the most important things to consider. How do your images play together between posts? Are you telling a larger story with the images you choose? Is that story calling your readers to action without words?

In order for you blog to work for you, you must work for your blog. Using the “My Blog Topics” pre-writing organizer can help you do just that! And if you need further help with maximizing your SEO, purchase one of Tara’s e-books or set up a brainstorming session.
