Just do

A Little HutLast night I came across Patricia’s impromptu paper project and I intended on sharing the beauty and intricacies of the lines and small crevices with you today but as I began to write about it something deeper developed.

Patricia just did it.

She picked up her Xacto knife without fear and created a marvelous paper cube. She let nothing hold her back and allowed her true self to shine through.

This is what I need…to just do. I recently had an email conversation with Jess from Make Under My Life after reading her letter to small businesses and it instantly hit me like a ton of bricks. I know what’s keeping me from reaching my goals and moving my business along…it’s me. I need to just do. I need to stop reading every blog, forum, and e-book that I think will give me a quick answer on how to achieve my goals. I need to stop comparing myself to other companies and designers and beat myself up as to why I’m not quite there yet. Because you know what? I will be. Not I think I will or I hope to be…but I WILL. I will reach my goals and surpass them. I will not let fear dictate what I do or who I contact. I have learned all that I can absorb right now and it’s time to put my plan into action. It’s time to take those goals I’ve written down in my planner and stop staring at them and just go for it.

I’ve mentioned Thoreau’s quote before but I’ll mention it again:

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined.

It’s time to live the life I was destined to live and it’s time for you to do the same. Do you have goals that you were too scared to tackle? What’s holding you back? Why haven’t you reached for them? Jot down your thoughts and create baby steps to get you where you want to be. There’s nothing keeping you from them except… you.

    YES!!!
i was just talking about this with my husband yesterday. I have one more year until my son is in full-time school and daughter is in half-time, and I will have much more work-time then. I know that I want my business to be further along by that time so that I can really ramp it up next year, but there’s no reason I shouldn’t be doing all i can right now.
i have a ton of books, e-books, and forums/blogs/articles that i read and have read many times, and while they are all helpful, inspiring, and wonderful resources, they often take so much of my time that i haven’t got any left for the DOING! what good is it to have all the info in your head if it doesn’t come out as part of the process? i am paring back my time “researching” and ramping up my time “doing”. i feel like fall is going to be a big turning point for me. while i don’t think i could ever fully give up twitter and my colleagues + friends i’ve found here, the time i’m spending doing things other than making is going to have to drop significantly. let’s do it!!
thanks for the post, it solidified so much of what i’ve been thinking lately.

You’re welcome Lesley! I know you’re going to do fabulous as your products are amazing. I was getting so overwhelmed with everything and realized I was doing more research rather than applying. Now I’m excited to start putting these into action. We should check in on each other and make sure we’re on track, perhaps a monthly ‘What have you done?’ check-in?

SO true! I have the problem of being an idea machine…but I get too many of them, and I never follow though with them and I just get overwhelmed and then I just get stuck. I need to pick one at a time and follow through! You are SO talented Bridgett and have amazing ideas…don’t compare yourself to others (I am guilty of this too though) and just do it! :)

Isn’t that vicious cycle daunting?? I’m so glad we realized what was happening and now can do something about it.

    Bridgett,

This is the best post I have read in a long time! I am so glad you have come to realize this. Isn’t it great? Don’t you feel at peace? Isn’t it uplifting to realize that you are the one holding the secret to your own success? I am positive you will achieve your goals and go beyond that. So here is to you, friend! I wish you all the success you deserve.

    xoxo

You are not alone! And either am I – thank goodness :)

Oftentimes, I think this is half the battle. Although I do love the planning, it gets in the way and I never seem to get moving.

I do find when I finally get going, it is more painless and fun than I could have imagined. Great post – love your blog and shop!

    Lori
